Epic releases Reality Scan 1.4
Epic Games has announced the release of Reality Scan 1.4, an update to their mobile application designed for creating high-fidelity 3D models using smartphones and tablets. This free-to-download app is available for both iOS and Android devices.
The latest version introduces a new cropping experience, allowing users to gain precise control over the processing volume. This ensures that only the necessary parts of the scan area are included in the model. The update facilitates easy switching between fixed 2D views and adjusting boundary lines for better accuracy.
Reality Scan 1.4 also features improvements in mesh quality. The application now automatically filters out unwanted elements such as floating triangles and small mesh fragments, resulting in cleaner final meshes. Additionally, the update enhances the UV mapping process, leading to more uniform UV maps. This improvement is expected to enhance texture rendering and lighting in 3D tools.
Another significant feature of this update is the addition of categories and tags within the RealityScan app. Users can now categorize and tag their models before sharing them to Sketchfab, making these models more searchable and easily discoverable on the platform.
To assist new users, the app includes new tutorial slides that illustrate the scanning process and provide tips on choosing suitable subjects for scanning. While the new tutorial format is a slideshow, users can still access the previous video tutorial via the app settings.
Reality Scan 1.4 now requires a minimum of 20 photos for processing, a change intended to prevent accidental submissions that are unlikely to succeed. The app now also displays a list of recent changes upon first launch after an upgrade and notifies users of available updates.
The update addresses several bugs, particularly for Android and iOS users. Issues resolved include problems with green photos or artifacts on Android and an incorrect display of the “Update Preview Model” button on iOS, along with other unexpected crashes.
