FinalRender 4 released with spectral based CPU/GPU rendering

Cebas has released FinalRender 4, with a completely overhauled core that uses spectral wavelength simulation to recreate optical effects they claim are impossible for ray-trace based renderers. New features include:
  • Hybrid CPU and GPU rendering with give the same results, have the same feature set, and can be used simultaneously.
  • Spectral-based Rendering to simulate effects such as diffraction, dispersion, absorption, iridescence and interference accurately.
  • Support for 3DS Max’s standard lights as well as a new multithreaded IES light object.
  • One-click 360 panoramas.
  • A scene converter to translate V-Ray and Mental Ray scenes to FinalRender.
  • Forest Pack Pro support.
  • A dedicated car paint material.
  • Plus much more.
FinalRender 4 is available only under a rental licensing scheme priced at £24.50 a month, billed annually. You can use up to 2 GPUs with this license but unlimited GPUs and render nodes are also available each for the cost of a single additional license.  Find out more on Cebas’ website.

So now they are developing Final Render (again)… where is moskito renderer?
Looks like Final Render did have better brand, so they integrated moskito features for Final Render? And make it subscription based…

You could easily guess that it is going to be subscription based because tP is also on the same track. You are right about Moskito, it seems to be gone.

From the beginning Cebas said that Moskito was an earlyversion of what will become the new finalrender. It has only gpu capacities, and its cheaper, so they both will coexist (I guess).

…but Moskito is gone from their website.

Seems like the marketing states unlimited rendering. However you still have to pay for it.

You have to buy a workstation subscription then a “Unlimited” network rendering subscription.

My QUESTION would be…
1: If I have 10 Artist workstations and want to use Final Render on the farm.
Do I need 10 additional “Unlimited” network subscriptions too?

Speaking of marketing. If the only license and billing option is one year why present the per month cost? Is 294 such a large expense it needs to be broken down into a non existent payment and license scheme?
The per minute cost soooo low.

Been with Cebas stuff since they had Real Lens Flare duking it out with Digimation’s lens package…oh the 90s.

They have always been rather slow on new versions, and fR was completely dead to newer versions of Max for YEARS while they worked on this. Not sure how the rental-like model will add value with the historical update cycle but maybe they plan to speed up.

Honestly, having access to fR was potentially the ONLY reason I would have even considered renewing by Max perpetual license sub. But eventually AD is going to force me into rental, and then I’d be renting a renderer for a rented package. Call me old fashioned, but I’m out….way too many renderers and packages to risk tying my projects to rental software.

@Clubber. Yeah, that aspect confused/amused me.

Because in a certain sense, I have unlimited beer…I just have to pay for each one.

that feels like a big fail to me, i think this is already dead before even being released

@alex – – maybe they have the AD / Anagnost approach – – “Who cares if we lose all the old customers, we can get new ones!” – but that MIGHT work for Autodesk, and it MIGHT work for Chaos Group at this point..but smaller player who’s been essentially dark for years (fR, I recognize tP was active)…?

You need one Unlimited license for your network (all of it) not many 🙂 so it is 10 + 1. Price is so affordable it’s a no brainer

Ed, looks like a nice release, but one small issue with the presentation/marketing. The FR logo is a copy of Keyshot…a fact they will NOT be happy with, and can cause you some legal issues.

It really would help a great deal to contract a Graphic Designer and Motion Graphic artist to handle your promo videos. You’re a very bright software engineer, but promotional content isn’t your forte. No shame in that. You cannot be an expert in everything. Let someone else handle it for you.

Yes, you are so right. A well designed website and great looking promo videos would help much. The tools you deliver are great but the visuals also have to show that.

FinalRender was my first renderer. For those who still remember, there were 3 of them in those years: RayGun, RadioRay/LightScape and FinalRender. My first Computer game was done with FinalRender – completely! 😀 it saved my life many times. I will, despite the fact i have almost all renderers on my Computer, get this update too – alone FinalToon and some shaders are irreplaceable.

I think FinalRender is the the last true 3ds Max renderer. It is tailored to 3dsMax architecture as no other. The quantity of options and shaders, material supports and features is not to found in other renderer. I hope it will now wake up from the 10 years winter-sleep – but it awakes in a completely different world, with new people, habits and expectations.

This means: when i see my students, they spend almost whole day in Unreal and Blender/Maya, they have only heard about 3dsMax 🙁

Point them (your students) to Stack!

Tons of great material/references/jobs which used 3dsMax!

Hope to see you there 😉

@Igor I owned (licensed, sure..let’s use the right words, I guess) FinalRender and RadioRay/Lightscape…one of my first experiences with Autodesk just dumping products I bought (I think prior to that was just Animator Pro)

I might have a vastly different opinion about holding my nose and renting if I wasn’t heading away from Max (maybe 27 years is enough?)

On the other topics – for a graphics company their logo/graphics work has never been outstanding, but my biggest complaints have always been their rather….severe and arcane?….UIs, and their fairly bold advertising claims…but that’s just personal taste.

I wish them luck because Edwin has always been a decent guy. It’s just not worth it to me in the current context…fifteen years ago I may have jumped in.

I’m assuming (incorrectly) that there’s no demo mode, or no particular benefit in terms of pricing/terms for current owners? Not demanding that, nor likely to take advantage..really just curious.

Forgot to add….while my thoughts on rental are known…I’d probably have less problem with a rental model that didn’t have all the DRAWBACKS of rental, yet still requires me to buy an entire YEAR at a time. The large cash commitment of perpetual licensing without the benefits.

The imaginary per month cost probably has more to do with trying to establish a false price parity with another renderer that does have a real 1 month option that costs 28.50USD per month.
