Gavin Gouldon on why aspiring 3D modellers shouldn’t bother with demo reels

Gavin Gouldon on why aspiring 3D modellers shouldn’t bother with demo reels

Gavin Gouldon, lead character artist at Insomniac Games, has published a polemic article about why students and aspiring 3D modellers shouldn’t be taught to create demo reels to land a job in the games industry. He raises questions about wider perennial issues concerning the role and responsibility of education in keeping pace with the industry, and preparing students for the world of work. Read his position on Flipped Normals.

I disagree. A video showing the model in motion or simply a turntable is a great addition to a stills gallery. Seeing what happen with the model with motion do add something. On the other hand diplaying models with a 3D browser plugin can get your model easily stolen, avoid this if your model has any potential value for resale.
