Last Tuesday, CNet reported that Intel has announced a slippage in their schedule for the release of their Intel Itanium IA-64 processor family. Revenues from the platform are not anticipated until Q4 and only “pilot systems” will be shipping this year.
What’s a “pilot system”? Pilot systems are shipped to IT end-users for testing, and what could be considered “infrastructural programming.” Pilot systems will be followed by release of generally available system hardware, operating systems environments, and applications. According to this source, “Thousands of Itanium processor based development systems have already been shipped to OEM customers, operating systems vendors, independent software vendors, and IT end-users using them for the qualification of systems and development of software.”
