After so many disappointments with launches as a 3dsmax user, Last nights Houdini 16 Amarok launch was impressive. It feels great to be on the right side of software development within our industry for a change. You can see they are developing on all fronts within 3D software as this release demonstrates. They are targeting Softimage users, offering them a new home and I think many will leave and join SideFX for Houdini as a future proof software not vulnerable to the whims of shareholder profits over software for a creative industry.
At least there is now something to look forward to this year. 🙂

I am so looking forward to this version and what’s to come.
The feature set is nothing short of impressive.
Can’t wait to try out the new boolean and ocean stuff.
And they didn’t even make a big deal out of a fully OpenCL Pyro Workflow which is something I am especially interested in.

Those Houdini booleans look like the first I’ll ever use without holding my breath. Like oooooohhh, please don’t crash, don’t crash…
Superb job!!!
Maaaan…Those landscape tools. Along with all the Houdini procedural power. I think I’ll finally make that Mars short…And render in UE4.

Could this have anything to do with the guys leaving from Autodesk. Maybe someone scolded, “look at that little company called sidefx taking all our customers and offering stellar updates. Let whoever is responsible leave!!! Now!!!”

For anyone about to watch the video of the launch event, jump to 19 minutes in. The first 19 minutes is just waiting for it to begin.
