CG Channel has posted a thorough review of Iray renderer, now separated from 3DS Max and commercially available from Nvidia on a yearly rental: “It does what Nvidia claims it does: achieve photorealistic results with a minimal amount of tweaking.” Read the review in full on CG Channel.

it’s a shame about no mention of the Titan X card with 12gb ram or the new 1080 pascal cards with super low price points low wattage and as fast as titan’s either… maybe you’ll update the review at some time in the future.

Iray for 3ds max doesn’t have a matte material shader either which renders it’s problematic then you want to comp stuff together.

fur and hair don’t work in iray either so using it for rugs/grass is a non starter unless you make max convert to geometry rather than the hair/fur rollout with it’s tip root shading…you lose that with iray and octane gpu renderer too..

Matte materials aren’t needed in iray+ since you can do the matte with LPE. Less convenient but also way more control than the standard render elements.
