Four years ago, Kevin Margo released a teaser for a new short film called Construct about a robot who stumbles across his employees illegal activities and must fight to save himself and his family. The full short is now available to view online. The project is of particular interest because it has been created with the support of several hardware and software companies including NVIDIA and Chaos Group as a way to explore new production methods and showcase the latest developments in technology.

If you’d like to learn more about the project then Chaos Group has also released an interview with Kevin Margo and Derron Ross and FXGuide has a detailed article about the production techniques.

In the short term there are further plans to release a VR version of the film using Presenz technology that allows you to move your head in realtime with a predefined area. In the longer term a feature film adaptation is in the works.

Beautifully made, looks fantastic and nicely choreographed and edited. I’ll always give credit to people who finish personal projects like this. It’s a lot easier having an opinion about a short than making one. Having said that, all I can think after watching it is why? Still, I hope Mr. Margo accomplished his goal. He is certainly a master CG artist, demonstrated through all of the work he has done.
