In a recent blog post, Maxon UK’s Managing Director Liam Stacy discusses the pros and cons of permanent and rental licensing. “We believe the choice should be yours to make. Therefore, we now offer both long-term and short-term software solutions. Even better, we offer a chance to upgrade from short-term to perpetual licenses.” More on Maxon’s blog.

At least they respect their customers and offer options, even an upgrade path. And they call it “rental” instead of insulting their customers by calling it “subscription”.

“If a new release of Cinema 4D comes out, you’re stuck with the version you have until it is time to extend your license.”

WHAT? That’s a massive drawback in comparison with Autodesk or Adobe offering, where you upgrade instantly (if you so desire) when a new version comes out.

What amaze me is that no other software vendor has offered a competitive response to SideFX who offer the best and most modern software of all (Houdini) for only 199$/year for Indie customers. I’m a max user who was just forced to buy Houdini just because it does so many things that any other soft can’t do and the price is so low. For sure when I switch my entire pipeline to houdini or make more money, I will then have to buy a full license but I think their move is very clever like their software. And I also installed Blender cause I’m amaze that it is also starting to do stuff that many expensive softwares can do and this one will always be free and will always be more and more developped.

they can’t
the reason that sidefx can do this offer is before they head only about 5% or even less customer in the indie section. ther mean incone in the past decades where big studios. for they it doesn’t hurt there income stream. modo or cinema 4d the main income is from indie so they will cut there income heavyly. hope that anwsers the question. 🙂

“That’s what SI did which was the start of downfall of SI.”
Avid you mean?

No it was not the downfall of XSI. Downfall of XSI was offering without a GI render like Vray.

In short not many bought it – I was one those that bought it expecting much more from Mentalray – It should be told that Softimage guys have almost as much fault as well, there were shaders and functionalities – CTRL keeps to mind -that improved mentalray much more and they stood fiddling without realizing the war that was going on.

You can’t fight without a competitive render engine. It is that simple.
See how in the present Redshift is extending Softimage live by leaps and bounds.

Allegorithmic does it right. You own the software after paying monthly rates. That’s incredibly fair. Everything else is just a way to earn more money from their customers. I have dropped adobe cc. I hope no client wants to modify an old project……
