If you read the article is from before Sidefx announcement, and this project is already in development for some time now, as well the USD implementation in 3dsmax announced.
USD has been present all over siggraph 2019. Blender adding support soon, max and maya, projects like Omniverse from Nvidia creating a USD platform, and obviously Solaris, looks next year will be the USD year and this is good for everybody!

i don’t exactly mean the siggraph announcement. it’s been on for a long while and i’m sure sidefx and autodesk know about the main new features of their rivals.
there is the beta used on productions in studios, there are leaked files/docs in earlier versions (ok, that was pdg but it shows the ways) so a steady flow of news is assured.

USD integration into Autodesk products has been going on since long before any competitor’s product demos at Siggraph. Other cool things are in the Autodesk pipeline as well. 🙂

Ah, of course. Who doesn’t know of the myriads of shocking new features that come up in each and every release of anything Autodesk creates? They are and will always be the forerunners of technology, innovation and of course fairness. Blender and Houdini are weak jokes in comparison, they’re already struggling and their days are counted!!! (sarcasm off)

Actually, USD is a scene description that works with file formats like Alembic, not in place of them.
