Foundry has announced the release of Modo 15.1. New features include OmniHaul, a new customisable gesture-based approach to controlling tool properties and channels; Curve Booleans, a new way to create 2D designs that can be used to create complex geometry, plus improvements to geometry booleans and unsubdivide;  Deferred and Paused Evaluation which can improve interactivity for procedural modelling and performance-intensive rigs; mPath QuickCam which allows users to navigate through a scene in the standard render window with the ability to “look around” similar to game navigation; support for Python 3 and QT5; plus much more. See a full list on the Foundry website and watch a course that introduces many of the new features.

Not so bad of an update and they are working on something similar to 3ds Max new smart extrude tool.

max’s version is ok, but zbrush does it better. What happened to Modo anyway? It was a 3d modeling prodigy in it’s time 🙁

I still find it very good. What’s holding it back is performance but they said to be rewriting the code from C to C++ so they can improve it further. We’ll see.

Decided to try the new version and see what I could do for myself for that already done challenge from Clint (pwnisher) on youtube (Alternative Realities). So much inspiration I got from the submissions.

So while I wait for the original file from a friend, I downloaded a Mixamo walking animation to start blocking and damn … Modo doesn’t play the animation because the materials are too heavy? It’s 4 materials (diffuse, normal, bump and transperency). 2K each. If I put on wireframe it plays normal.

By comparison as I tried on Blender and even LW, both play normally even with VPR/Cycles viewport. Crazy how terrible modo is for animation, even basic ones.

Price is also what drove me to other software.. Modo was a steal under $900. Now at $2000 it’s in the realm of other more powerful apps. Cant justify it.

well well, nice software and nice update but they need to realize what is going on right now in the market. all these softs are already dead.
no more paid 3d software for noobs

I think they realize that hence their focus on the shoe market. It’s a billion dollar market and apparently they got it covered.

Looks a good update with small details that change everyday QOL.I switch to blender but find modo more finish. The tools are more robust but will stick to blender because i feel the future is brighter there

geez, can’t stand modeling in blender, it’s so clunky, not pleasant , not polished experience.

Exactly, i feel the same, but the direction is taking tell me i have to learn a new modeler soon. and blender is the only viable modeler. maya is crap, max may be better but still a very heavy app for modeling.

I used to be Modo and C4D user but Blender has got better every year. New modelling tools and geometry nodes which are still under development are great. And Blender’s GUI is amazingly good after few months intensive training. Still Modo has good tools but its lacking in many areas – but i need to say that this update look very promising but its coming too late for me. Well maybe it will keep current users in modo and if modo can make something innovative and make bigger jump/steps in future updates maybe it will make me think coming back but at the moment Blender’s development looks very promising and with Houdini its amazing tool. I wonder why Foundry never bring ADF to modo’s sculpting? And no turbulencefd or other vfx tools for modo :/ Its still just for modelling and basic animations and for product designing – i don’t get it – because foundry is more for vfx works (nuke, furnacore, mari etc.)

Foundry acquire luxology believing they bought a good software but foundry stopped to invest into modo leading to non innovative software. Luxology drove innovation. But its done now.
