Autodesk has announced the release of 3ds Max 2023. Some of the highlights include:
- Retopology Pre-processing allowing users to handle larger amounts of data with less setup and preparation by enabling the Remesh option as a pre-processing step.
- Retopology Data Propagation allowing the user to view the input and output mesh results of the retopology action.
- The ability Snap the working pivot
- A new Autobackup toolbar has been added to the default user interface in 3ds Max.
- glTF Material & Exporter add support for using glTF materials plus the ability to export 3ds Max files as compact .gltf or .glb files.
- A new mode has been introduced to the Physical Material called Autodesk Standard Surface Compliant.
- 3ds Max 2023 includes MAXtoA 5.1.0 which introduces new features, bug fixes, performance optimizations, and production improvements.
- Smart Extrude now allows for a partial cut-through on an Editable Poly object.
- Improvements to Occlude Selection, including a speed boost of up to three times. In addition, its accuracy is also greatly improved, especially when using various marquee-style selections, such as rectangle, circle, and freeform.
- New user-requested keyboard shortcuts have been added for the Unwrap UVW modifier. They include shortcuts for Stitch, Pack, Grow, Shrink, and much more.
- Compressed Scene File Save Performance has been optimized to be almost two-times faster than before thanks to a new archiving library, multithreading, and other optimizations.
- Users can now only display the manipulators for the active level of the modifier stack that the user is on (instead of displaying all possible manipulators).
- Users can now work with the same style of multi-select options they use in 3ds Max to interact with the Per-Viewport Filtering dialog. This includes using Shift to multi-select in a sequence, and Ctrl to multi-select one-by-one.
- The Safe Scene Execution feature has been extended to ensure that execution of unsafe scripted commands found in Script File Assets, such as pre and post render scripts, is blocked by default.
- A new On-Demand Installer for Revit and Inventor imports is now included. This allows users to install the Revit Interoperability and Inventor Interoperability components only when needed, instead of during product installation.
- 3ds Max now ships with Python 3.9.7 featuring improved performance, new string functions, and improved quality.
- Support for Visual Studio 2019, enabling the software and all third-party plug-in developers to benefit from compiler optimizations and run-time improvements.

that’s it ?
Well, it says “Some of the highlights include”
If these are the so called “highlights”, I shudder to think of what the rest is.
Well. will wait until they update Roadmap page
Lol, maybe I’m missing something? Shortcuts and autobackup toolbar, snap the working pivot as an update, genius. Think a lot of these are covered in the previous point updates, yet to see speed increases in file save, if anything it’s slower in your average 3dsmax forest pack heavy scene. Retopology tool from my experiments is painfully slow. Very disappointing as usual.
not a one thing of these updates were in point updates. Smart extrude looks GREAT!
The best update in years! Bravo Autodesk!
Seriously, I don’t understand any of it; (
With the roadmap I had the impression that it would be a breakthrough now, and not for the next 10 years; (
I am saddened
Please don’t be upset 🙂 For years now, major updates have appeared in minor releases. 🙂 For example, Unfold3D appeared in 2022.3. Let’s wait for summer 🙂
Underwhelmed.
Also for Maya 2023…
https://help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2023/ENU/
Maya 2023 got a solid update… Even has a CreateVR tool now?
Oh I see that’s just a separate updated tool.. Still cool.
Ok, they tighten Maya Toolset, looks solid.
wow, that smart extrude looks great!
I’ve made the hard Houdini jump a few years ago. I’m really happy that I don’t have to deal with this stuff anymore.
YOU AND ME BOTH.

I can tell how it was for me: I’ve been using max for almost 20 years (and this is not including DOS years :O),
and even though I’ve decided to switch to Houdini around 2013 I’m still taking a look into 3ds max news here on CGPress every time.
I really liked 3dsmax. I was a fanboy. Still have a lot of sentiment for the software, but it’s just hard to believe how people are constantly supporting a company which is keeping this great app barely alive, while it could have been a real monster if they spent a tiny percentage of their resources.
TyFlow is the reason no-one should use 3dsmax. You’re paying this corp tons of money every year, which is almost like exaction for letting you use a plugin written by one guy, which is more versitile and advanced then anything those leeches gave you in 10 years.
This is truly mind-blowing.
Of course – if you’re in the arch-vis world this does not apply to you, max is great in that field and you don’t have much choice anyways.
So, in a way, this is a weird behavior from our side, but what I see here is just too peculiar not to come back 😀 Reading comments under 3dsmax news is like watching people with stockholm syndrome. Sorry.
For me, it is a valid review (except the last paragraph X)). But lets be honest, maybe they are in a dead end, it is a huge software with a huge development time involved, maybe R&D team isn’t that big to achieve lots of rebuild. It’s my two cents. But in terms of performance, it leaves any other software behind.
It’s so nice of you to assume that Houdini people have had girlfriends in the past! 😀
Haha.
Well, we all know that the strength of Max doesn’t come from Autodesk but from things like TyFlow, Itoo, Chaos, etc.

And yet, zero improvements on the existing rigging toolset. Biped and CAT has remained the same since they were added a million years ago. Same goes for Shave and Haircut.
This is the flaw of the subscription model – the company management / dev team know they have a large core of customers who won’t leave (soon), so they just do the bare minimum to give the appearance of forward momentum of the product – and keep the profits for the shareholders.
Autodesk has been doing this long before they switched over to the subscription model. IMO, they have been doing the bare minimum since Max 2005.
Nah bro lmao
Although my field of work is animation and we did not have a specific update in this version for animation, but the new update was appropriate in my opinion.
-save and compress save performance with autoback challenges! were two of the old problems of users that apparently improved from this version.
-Added glft is a good news for game and 3d internet activists.
-New pivot workflow which strangely feels lacking in Max for animation, rig and modeling since years ago.
-The new API is also good news for VFX developers and it seems that in the near future we should see new tools from bifrost in Max.
-With the tools added to retopology, it seems that in this section, modeler doesnt need plugins anymore.
The open and save performance increase on compressed file is actually a big improvement. A lot less time waiting for Max to let me work.
No progress on USD and again no Bifrost… ðŸ˜
biofrost is not what all it’s hyped up to be. Honestly it would be a waste of time to implement and work on bifrost. just use houdini for liquids or phoenix fd.
Too bad to hear, I’ve been waiting for a native node-based approach for a long time. The fluid part never hyped me. Always thought Bifrost would be some kind of native Houdini/GeometryNodes workflow in the future…
But well, I’m already in PhoenixFD, Tyflow and privately in Houdini Indie. And since Geometry Nodes I’ve been drawn back to Blender intensely.
However, that’s why a good USD integration would be important for 3dsmax and V-Ray.

Nice update. And is worth to remember that last years point updates tend to be better than “whole” numbers. API updates look super important for future!
Having been in the beta program a couple of times in the past the important thing to remember is that the whole number releases are the beta and the 3rd point release is the actual release.
I’ve been booted off my subscription, so this is the first 3ds Max Update I won’t be using.
From a glance at the features, there is not anything I will be missing. I would have thought there would be many users in my position, and of all releases, this would have been the Big One to woo us onto rental. However, it’s not, and so it sweetens the blow, and the ship drifts off into the sunset.
Do you are saying that we have all good news now, because we left the taps running?
There are some very nice performance improvements in Max 2023 to be missed and judging by the beta they are doing a great job bringing more goodies to 2023
Max 2022 is my last version too ( it’s still on perpetual for me ! ). If i got need for any updated version i’ll most likely go the indie route with an additional license …
I agree but it will take some doing to get me onto indi. I’m now finally free of AD.
what is the point of the guidelines if, in a post about 3ds max, we need to read disgusting russian propaganda?
there really needs to be a perma ban system, if not, every thread will be derailed by the agression apologists. please lets not have that.
on topic: really happy i am not giving money to autodesk.
Just report it as i did 😉
Ah, editing the post did not work. Just wanted to add that the community guidelines contains a contact us link. And the community guidelines can be found under the red post comment button when you write a new answer.
hey thanks. will do – the comment section looks much better without all the off topic garbage.
i apologize for adding to it sometimes, but some comments do trigger me.
Definitely 🙂
Me too buddy. Me too.
you are sure better at impulse control than me, my man.
Was really hoping for a modern vector image importing pipeline like Cinema. Still have to import Illustrator v8, kinda insane.
there has been support for pdf texture format for ages but i presume you are referring to paths for modelling. pretty funny that paths still need to be in illustrator v8. how difficult is to update the importer module, jesus christ.
The vector map using PDF is broken. There are ghosting and tiling artifacts at various screen sizes. SVG format works correctly with the vector map. I reported it years ago on the Autodesk forum (probably submitted a bug too) with detailed examples. Someone recently commented on that thread that it’s still broken, which is to be expected with Autodesk.
disgraceful tbh but really not surprising at all. these 3ds max updates are for me like stumbling across a facebook account from an ex and seeing photos of them habitually smoke crack.
Bigoted to call out JC – not all of us are atheists!
oh i know, there is all sorts here. actually now you mentioned it, i´ve even seen some complete morons commenting…
OK. The Problem for me is, as an User U pay for Things ad Had to fix 10 years ago. Yes, smartextrude ist nice, retopo too.
But, Animation, sculpting, Particle, rigging, Texture painting, mocap… Is Out of Date. No, Innovation.to slow development for the Prince.
Why after every update and new version, developer dont update the roadmap and 3ds max idea forum page faster?! Is this hard stuff?!!
Too much work for a multi billion company… Stock market to waych oit for one more person brought in to manage this means one more salary minus ceo bonus and profit sheet. Tsk rsk cant do.
