A joint effort between Boomer Labs and JokerMartini has resulted in Nexus, a new scene management plugin for 3DS Max. Nexus is a standalone node graph editor that is designed to simplify scene setup for rendering and assembly. Nexus graphs can be shared by users across email, chat and even across editors. The plugin is set to be released this fall. You can watch a demo video on JokerMartini’s Vimeo channel.

So I have another question:
why?
What is the point of this?
It seems way less usefull than MCG that is already a part of Max, not to mention MXS or Python Scripting.
Not trying to be negative but I’m really curious of the reasons behind this piece of software?

I think its completely different this is more for working with your scene to be able to controller multiple things from one controller, something like zookeeper. I could be wrong but thats what i got.

Very interesting ! this reminds me of RenderFlow beta, released a few years ago.
Any idea about the price ?

Amazing! really looking forward to try it. Have been waiting for years for someone to come up with a complete tool like that. You don’t show that much in the video but I hope it will be as good as it looks already 😉

It seems like nodal scene assembly which is great for complex scene logic such as car configurators. Katana is great for this but it’s overkill for most people and normally requires a TD on hand. V-Ray for Nuke is also great for a nodal approach to scene setup. Also one of the most powerful features of a nodal workflow is deferred loading of heavy assets.

When Autodesk rebuild Maya render layers I always felt they should have created a nodal approach.

I could have misinterpreted what this tool does but if it’s a commercially available nodal scene assembly tool that works well with v-ray and deadline then it would be the first of it’s kind that I’ve scene outside of a CG studio.

This looks really interesting. Especially if it’s available for older versions of Max (like 2014)

At the moment, we are planning to support MAX 2015 or higher.

Many thanks for the info Mathew. While there’s zero chance of me renting max in future, I’ll be keeping an eye on how Nexus shapes up, and maybe petitioning you!

This is DOA…no one really needs this. Anyone adopted zookeeper? Focus on what is really missing from the app and what everyone needs.

…and this is true too.
I’ll wait to see what the market decides.

I disagree. This is very much needed. I reckon this will be the best publicly available render pass manager for 3ds Max. Render pass management is severely lacking in vanilla 3DS max. I’m glad Joker/Boomer focused on this area of production.

I though Zookeeper was a really good idea, from what I remember it just had some problems and wasn’t as streamlined as it could have been. It was a bit all over the place with both Scene Explorer like interfaces as well as the node setup.

Nexus, while under NDA and can’t say too much other than what’s been shown, is so far more focused on organizing Render Elements and something akin to a much more user-friendly RPM. Being able to flip between different scenes is a side-effect of this, as based on the video you can set-up any state you want and render that.

Separate from Nexus, What’s your issue with the idea of Zookeeper? I feel personally nodes are the future. It just makes sense to me personally to go from a deck of cards (the stack) to a tree to make things both more powerful and much easier to set up more complicated setups. I see nodes as an evolution to a stack due to the fact that a stack can’t branch out.

infact my reply is zookeeper centred, I love the “nodes” idea…not proper the future but surely the present.
