Nuke Indie announced
Foundry has announced Nuke Indie, a new version that’s aimed at freelancers and small studios that turn over less than $100,000 per year. Nuke Indie combines the node-based compositing toolset of NukeX and the conform, editorial, and review features in Nuke Studio. However, there are a few limitations: notably, support for the Python API is limited making its use in pipelines and automation limited, and third-party plugin support is not included. Render resolution is also capped at 4K, but still, the majority of the other Nuke Studio features are present in the Indie version.
Nuke Indie can be rented for $499/£399 per year. In addition to the revenue restriction. the Indie version is limited to 1 per studio and cannot be used in a pipeline alongside any other Nuke commercial or Indie products. Find out more on the Foundry’s website.
This announcement coincides with an update to the Nuke family. Features of Version 12.2 include:
- USD import support. Nuke’s ReadGeo node now supports reading geometry contained in USD data. Extensions to ReadGeo will be open-sourced, allowing studios to customise the node to suit their USD workflows.
- Introduction of SyncReview. Multiple users can run collaborative review sessions in Nuke Studio, Hiero and HieroPlayer.
- Floating License roaming. Users can ‘check out’ floating licenses for use offline for up to 30 days.
- QuickTime support. A new MOV Reader and Writer, replacing the previous 32-bit and 64-bit QuickTime Read and Write support with a more stable system and streamlined UI.
- Several new and updated file formats supported.

Ooow, so close, yet so far… I hope others can find it useful though!
It looks so promising. A bit stiff price, but I would’ve jumped on IF it just could support plugins, and lifted the useless 10 command Python limitation.
similar thought here, then again most plugins would be more expensive than the nuke price anyway 🙂
Way too expensive for what they offer. For about half that price you can get a perpetual version of fusion without any limitation.
hardly matters at that price point because you can get your money back within one job anyway. comes down to which you personally prefer or your studio uses. both prices are very low for what you get, they are both amazing tools.
You’re not freelancing any significant project with that level of limitations, way too much manual work without scripting. Also no real studio is going to be employing multiple people yet somehow bringing in under $100k/year BEFORE taxes.
Finally!
İ understand the 4k output limit and different file format (by the way not even openable with other nuke indie even for the guizmo!)
But python scripting limit to 10 commands, why?! what does it mean? 10 lines of code? 10 call to a function within a script?
It looks like the exact same limitation as in the Non-Commercial version, which is 10 commands/functions – also counting loops! So yeah, it’s useless. I have some very basic scripts that for example just change the input path of my read nodes. And it won’t run because looping through nodes exceeds the 10 command limit.
I could totally understand if they took out some advanced pipeline functions, but 10 function limit is just dumb.
4K limitation and it’s own .nklc format, isn’t that enough?
Thanks for the explanation, yes seems totally unusable if you can’t even do loops..
I wonder if Cryptomatte would work with this version, being a gizmo and all.
Would love to have confirmation on this too! No Cryptomatte would be a deal breaker. (is Cryptomatte a plug-in or a guizmo?)
And more generally could we use guizmo from other? (no 3rd party plugin but just guizmo)
I believe Cryptomatte would work, it works in the non-commerical version.
Almost twice the price of DaVinci Resolve, which is perpetual and uncapped. Any questions?
Wow… you could argue that the price is justified but come on…
..no third party plugins and 10 command python limit like in the non-commercial?! why?
I appreciate the idea but I kind of feel insulted that they think indies don’t have pipelines. The whole reason I survive this business is because I automate everything and have a powerful pipeline-for-one going. Doing dozens of similar shot is prime territory for automating stuff and I’m not really clear what the crippled python api can and can’t do but I’m sure it will hurt at some point. Then no 3th party stuff.. I use cryptomatte for everything, that’s a 3th party item for nuke. 4k limit and custom file format I can live with. Maybe down the line it will open up more as happened to Houdini indie.
Totally agree, being an indie İ rely a lot on scripting and automation.
4k limit and encrypted file format is enough, İ mean it’s still 500$/year!
Hopefully that’ll change
