Oh man, Mari for $112 is very tempting even with those limitations. If only they had an intermediate version with 8k / 4 tile support for double the price!

I agree its is really tempting but I don’t like it being linked to steam. As for the limitations it would really great if they’d offer different packages with varying limitations depending on the price.

If there’s demand, why not? This ‘fight’ between TF and AD for the Indie market is good for users.

As a deal, Houdini is still the winner, but it’s nice.

interesting move…modo indie looks pretty good…i little confusing on what’s not included..i’m thinking it does not support any plugins or kits….they really need a comparison chart to clear up what’s In and what’s OUT in modo indie as well as Mari Indie…still all in all it’s a big wake up call for other vendors making 3d apps…i’d like to see a cinema4d indie arrive!

They had me on Mari Indie until I read it only supports 8bit export. That means you can’t clean up a 32 bit displacement map or paint HDR images on environment geometry. Even Substance Painter has 32-bit export, although you’re out of luck trying to match camera angles in Substance Painter without FBX import.

modo indie is basically like a boxed version of modo 801 but cannot load/use plugins, scripts or kits….also limitation on export file types and it saves in it’s own format not a standard modo format..it can however load standard modo files.

time to learn modo I guess – sounds much better than the steam version they had announced some time ago.

Maya LT is still quite expensive and no animation layers (houdini 14 indie will have animation layers).
