CGRecord have posted a review of PhoenixFD 2.2 for 3DS Max by Hammer Chen. In his review, Hammer goes through a lot of the great features of PhoenixFD, and compares it to existing tools like RealFlow. You can read the full review on the CGRecord website.
Excellent review. Phoenix FD is a great plug-in with top notch choasgroup forum support.
Only weak spot is render farm support (for Maya), but it sounds like this will pick up soon too.
Development is also very active with nightly builds. Not a stagnant piece of kit.
I think saying that the review compares to Realflow is overstressing it. They don’t make not even half of what needs to be said to compare both.
Yes PhoenixFD is no where near what realflow does interms of liquids. It’s like comparing Krakatoa to Houdini different tools.
PhoenixFX is looking better in some ways but in others still clunky.
Nice review, but agreed that it really doesn’t compare Realflow vs PhoenixFD substantially. I’m not really sure it can be a 1:1 comparison. I use both for fluids and it just depends on the scale of the job which one I go with. There are loads benefits and limitations with both tools… Voxels vs. particles. Realflow doesn’t do smoke/fire. Phoenix doesn’t have nearly the kind of control Realflow does (and the price tag reflects that). The list goes on.
This is still a nice review highlighting the benefit of why you would want PhoenixFD if you’re using Max + Vray.
