Samia Halaby’s Amiga powered Kinetic Paintings

Samia Halaby’s Amiga powered Kinetic Paintings

After a week of whiz-bang technology demos coming from GDC, it’s interesting to step back in time and admire the work of 81 year old Samia Halaby, a painter who started creating Kinetic Paintings on the Commodore Amiga 1000 in 1985. As this short documentary by Youtube channel The Guru Meditation shows, Samia continues to produce artworks using the same tools, which have been exhibited in The Guggenheim Museum, The British Museum, Lincoln Center, The Chicago Institute of Art and many more. Watch it on YouTube.

Wonderfull.

Years before “CGPress” was “MaxUnderground” and years and years before it, i entered 3D World on Amiga500 and 1200. Real3D, LightWave, Imagine, Reflections. My frist 3d Computer game was made on it. Even as i have founded own game company in 1997, i still worked on Amiga. I still have my own 3d-game boxes behind me on the book-shelfs. This machine will never die. I still don’t understand how stupid they were to destroy such money and technology captial.
This machines were something we made dreams from.

Amiga is the only computer I ever had any affection for. From the 500 to the 2000 with GVP 68040 cards and on to a 3000 tower, it was just a bit too far ahead of it’s time. Lightwave really started the use of 3d in TV productions, and I remember doing ads in Imagine 2! Real 3D was great as well, in it’s weird way. Everything was solid modelling. Am I right in thinking that Relections was Cinema 4D’s ancestor?

no offence to Samia, but I genuinely wonder if I’m the only one who thinks that an actual raw bullsh!t is little bit more artistic than paintings like that

can you please enlighten me and tell me what do you find Artistic about this “Art?” I really wanna get it. I always fail to see any creativity, real artistry or skill in any kind of those paintings, I guess maybe I’ll never understand!

@Amigo: Maybe it helps to take a look a bit at art history – since late 19th century art is not about crafts/perfection anymore, but exploring/experimenting with new materials/concepts/techniques -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_art

Amigo,
Let me try to explain it with an analogy:
With Art is, well, as with women. You can understand how “it” works, and get them easily without effort just because you intuitively can, or you learn and learn how to come into this game. In both cases you will manage it, it is a high-level experience in the life.

But just sitting around and doing nothing and shouting “I don’t understand it, it is bullshit!” – you will die without this experience. I would maybe try as first with learning the principles.

I wish you a lot of success, you won’t be disappointed 🙂
