Silo 2024.0 launches file instances feature for enhanced 3d modeling workflows

Nevercenter has released an update to their 3D modeling software, Silo which includes a new feature known as “file instances.” This addition allows users to reference separate files within their projects, streamlining the process of updating and managing various components of a model.

The file instances function enables real-time updates across different project files. When a source file is modified, the changes automatically synchronize with the linked instances in the main project. This new feature supports a variety of file formats, increasing compatibility and flexibility for users.

The update is expected to improve the workflow for individual designers and collaborative teams by allowing for more efficient organization of complex models and projects. You can read more about the release and download a free trial on the Silo website.

I tried it,

I was super interested with the concept: a pure polygonal modeling/UV tool that doesn’t have the bloat of a full dcc. It could even become the ultimate modeling tool in the future with sculpting / cad features. BUT

then I discover you cannot import alembic nor usd…erm ok? I guess that can be added soon.
then I imported a 2 millions faces model, the software was dying… like what?? I was expecting killing performance humiliating Maya’s or Blender’s perfs because the tool is so specialized and recent… I was planning to import some 50 millions polys and the software to be at full speed in edit mode… very far from it.
then I was struggling creating just groups in the scene editor to manage my geometry structure, no right click menu with extra options, only the most basic of basic visibility options available, can’t do much with that…

Good start, but I’ll pay 160 dollars when the above comments are not relevant anymore.

You seriously want to edit 50 million poly object? Man Z brush can barely handle my 10 million poly on a next gen machine.
Good old days when artists wheren’t spoiled with dirty lazy model work. just like the tiktok generation we now have the Z Brush generation and a lack of quality modelers.

Yeah, 50 millions poly to edit… never heard of lidars ?
It’s not about spoiled artists, it’s about dealing with dense client data, maybe you would know it you were not so pedantic.

I used this app almost 15 years ago when both Modo and Silo were competing to become pure standalone modellers. However, I find it interesting that it is still around and pushing forward even though a giant called Blender is in the scene. Back then 3d scene was dominated by the industry giants. Do we really need such standalone modellers anymore? Personally speaking, we don’t anymore. My two cents…

“a giant called Blender” ?
Heh….
you’re not into 3d much, are you? 🙂

I’m not attempting to start a flame war. I’ve used almost every 3D app out there. I started with 3ds Max since version 4.0, Maya 6.5, XSI 6 through its demise, Cinema 4D 8, etc. Isn’t Blender big? Yes, it is, even though I don’t like its workflow as you guys described. Let’s give credit when credit is due

With Blender having the worst User interface and user experience of all 3d applications out there (something they keep trying to fix and failing because at this stage they need to redo everything), I happily accept jumping over into any other 3d app which will have literally 30 mins of leanring curve for me than trying to memorize the million shortcuts and dropdowns in Blender. Luckily i’m a max user and modeling has always been king there.

So true, but it works pretty decently when you adapt yourself to it. For me, the best 3D app was XSI, but it was killed by Autodesk. That’s why I call Blender a giant because it is dominating the scene independently without resorting to killing its competitors.

It still pains me that XSI’s simple but effective soft selection controls disappeared without anyone thinking to integrate a similar approach into max’s clunky method. A tiny feature, seemingly lost forever.

Autodesk bought XSI for 35 million dollars. It was already dying, super small user base. They would not sell it so cheap if it was doing good.
