Trid is a free command line tool by Italian developer Marco Pontello designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. It’s very useful for identifying files that come from OSs that don’t use extensions as file type identifiers, and for recovering unknown files from backups. It supports wildcards, batch mode, and offers the ability to automatically add/convert file extensions. An online version for quickly identifying single files is also available. More at Trid’s site.
