Ubisoft has announced they have joined the Blender Foundation’s Development Fund as a corporate Gold member – listed on the Blender Dev Fund page at €30K/year. Not only that, and perhaps more significantly, they also announced that Ubisoft Animation Studio, which is a department of Ubisoft Film and Television, will also use Blender for their productions and assign developers to contribute to Blender’s open-source projects. Read more about the announcement on Ubisoft’s website.

They realized the big benefits of having the actual source code and having control over their software for a big/medium company that has developers, no more plugins, they will work with their fully customized Blender version, and to give back they will, not only pay money, but also contribute code and with another super important thing, with usage!
These are great news!
Autodesk, you are going to be broke soon! hahaha
na … M&E sector is just a tiny drop in their revenue ( i think i remember 7-8% or so )
In a financially perverted world where shareholders and stock markets freak out over a joke on Twitter you can bet your bottom they will freak out on a 1% marginal shift let alone 8 :).
Yeah that’s a nice fantasy you’ve dreamt up and it would be nice, but nothing about a middling game dev who makes generally garbage, endlessly rehashed games is going bankrupt Autodesk over a 7% market share.
Actually 7-8% is quite a lot and keep in mind: ppl will get fired which is never nice to hear (except if its someone incompetent from upper management).
I think 2020 will be the Year of Blender.
Now all you need is ILM joining in and it is done deal.
I think these studios are realizing how much overhead expenses they pay annually to Autodesk by just having their software installed on a thousand or so machines.
The more they encourage Blender the more hiring pool who use Blender will be available for them and with enough time their entire workflow could change to an Open source one + in Studio custom tools.
My concern in all this is this fundamental question: As technology gets cheaper and almost free, will some of that funding be diverted to artists and technicians often working unpaid overtimes? Or will it go into the pockets of CEOs and their bonuses instead?
CEO for sure.
CEO +1
I hope unpaid overtimes would decrease as global awareness will grow
