Neill Blomkamp’s Oats Studios has released a new short film as part of their first volume of experimental releases. Oats Studios is exploring an alternative funding model by asking for donations directly from the audience either via its website, or by purchasing packs of assets including the video files, concept art, 3d models and more from each film on Steam. Google has released The Story of An Idea, a short film directed by FX Goby originally screened at its annual I/O conference in San Francisco. Nexus Studios employed 40 artists from different disciplines to create an animation that starts in black and white line drawing and gradually becomes a full CG environment. Watch it on YouTube.

AMD has announced, after several months of beta testing, that ProRender is now available and fully integrated with Blender and Solidworks. Formerly named FireRender, Radeon ProRender is a free physically-based rendering engine that is capable of making use of any manufacturer’s GPUs. In addition to the new platforms AMD has also updated its existing implementations for 3DS Max and Maya to improve viewport rendering performance so that ProRender can be used in real-time, as well as the ability to harness the power of the GPU and CPU simultaneously.
