Unity Technologies has previewed several new features of Unity 2017.1 during the recent Unite Europe conference. The two headline features are Timeline, a new multi-track sequencing tool for the creation of cinematics, short films and cut-scenes; and Cinemachine, a suite of smart cameras to automate the process of creating camera animations. The new version of Unity is due out at the end of July. Avid has released Media Composer First, a free cut-down version of its flagship editing package for Windows and Mac OS X. This release is aimed at users who want to get a taste of a professional grade NLE, featuring many of the same features of its big brother, with a few exceptions: a limit of 4 video tracks and 8 audio tracks, resolution restricted to a maximum of 1080P HD, limited LUT support, limited toolsets for color-correction, audio editing and effects. Egyptian artist Ahmed Shalaby has posted his most recent rigging reel of characters and vehicles, created using a mixture of 3DS Max and Maya. Watch it on YouTube (also of note is a new rig Ahmed is working on with friends that he plans to make freely available soon).
