A script by Harry Houghton for splitting an object into several segments that can then be linked back into a skeleton hierarchy. The use of segmented geometry as a replacement for a skinned mesh allows for faster playback in the viewport. More on Vimeo.
This is definitely a task for automation. I also wrote a script for this purpose. I like the simplicity of your workflow, but in practice being able to adjust slice regions is very useful as is automated parenting to joints. Here is my example of this http://www.madguru.com/archives/429
