Researchers from Ohio State University and Adobe have presented a real-time painting system called Wetbrush that simulates the interactions between brush, paint and canvas at the bristle level. They implemented the system on the GPU, and according to the researchers, it allows artists to use techniques from traditional painting that they are already familiar with. Watch the video on YouTube and read the paper (PDF) for more.
Nothing all that new. See http://www.expresii.com/ by Nelson Chu (who formerly worked on Project Gustav and Fresh Paint), http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/gustav/ Microsoft research Project Gustav that resulted in Fresh Paint (A product basically hamstrung because Microsoft didn’t want to annoy Adobe) and DAB from Chapel Hill http://gamma.cs.unc.edu/DAB/ (One of the researchers on DAB went on to work on Project Gustav but now works for Google last I heard). The only bad thing about this news is the Adobe part. If it comes out for iPad Pro, a subscription is basically a guarantee. Not going to be any good on the Surface Book since tilt is not supported in the stylus. Will work for Wacom products though.
