Akromatic releases lighting checker

When supervisors are on-set shooting and need good reference they often use lighting checkers that gives consistent reference of how the scene is affected by the different lighting conditions from shot to shot and scene to scene. Akromatic has released a variety of gray and chromatic spheres in different configurations for this use with the latest one named "Tiny". The name was chosen because of its size and portability. "Tiny" contains two spheres, one gray and one chromatic and both spheres are 9cm in size (it isn't specified if this is in radius or diameter). (more...)

Andreas Glad of developer DICE shares FX techniques for liquids in games

Last week at GDC Andreas Glad held a presentation at SideFX's booth demonstrating in detail how DICE moved away from sprite based liquids to meshes generated in Houdini for Battlefield 1. Among other tips he demonstrates how they were able to keep it efficient without taking up too many resources on the current generation of consoles. Vexus, the node-based scene assembly and render pass management application for 3DS Max by Boomer Labs and Joker Martini, has been updated to v2.0. Autodesk SIGGRAPH Event News — including future of Naiad

(Updated) This thread has become longer than a human can read. If something new surfaces we will report it on a new news item.
(Updated) This thread does not want to slide. An important message was just posted by Tom Hudson, with good news, he was contacted by Autodesk regarding the plugins he wrote. Furthermore, Tom Hudson offers Autodesk "joining a group of developers who would essentially resume the role of the Yost Group and take over primary development in return for some sort of royalty agreement, reducing Autodesk’s upfront costs while potentially increasing sales and customer satisfaction." He finishes his message to Autodesk with the following "Your customers will LOVE YOU for doing this. Your upfront investment will be SMALLER and you will MAKE MORE MONEY doing this. Think about it."
