Autodesk open sources its USD plugin for 3ds Max
Autodesk has released its USD plugin for 3ds Max as open source on GitHub. This plugin, integrates support for OpenUSD within 3ds Max, bringing advanced workflows as part of the AOUSD initiative.
The plugin enables the import and export of USD data using both traditional methods and the ability to load and edit USD stages directly within the 3ds Max viewport without requiring intermediate steps. This feature supports collaborative workflows, allowing data to move seamlessly between applications like Maya and 3ds Max, improving interoperability in DCC-agnostic pipelines.
The 3ds Max USD plugin includes tools for creating and managing USD data, offering a modern alternative to core referencing workflows like Object XRef and Scene XRef. Its functionality supports ASCII and binary USD formats, USD Explorer, cameras, lights, and MaterialX materials, along with integration for 3ds Max controllers. Developers can use the API to customize import/export processes or work directly with USD data through C++ and Python scripting.
