(Updated February 9, 2009) Shane Griffith from Autodesk has posted more information, images and videos on the new modeling tools that will be available in Max 2010, providing official confirmation that they are indeed an improved version of Polyboost. According to the post, Carl-Mikael Lagnecrantz, original developer of the toolset, will from now on work with the Autodesk team to continue to develop Polyboost’s (now renamed to Graphite) capabilities.
Great news for Max users! Autodesk surprises us with an announcement that brings a long list of new features, as used to be the case some years ago with 3DS Max releases. 3DS Max Design 2010 includes over 100 tools for advanced polygonal modeling (which according to comments are related to Carl-Mikael Lagnecrantz’s excellent Polyboost set of tools), significant improvements in viewport display, new cloth features, linear color space workflow enhancements, more functional Scene Explorer, OBJ import improvements, better Photoshop interoperability, more precise control over hair styling, new ProBooleans Quadify modifier, and more. What’s missing? There is no mention of a long overdue node-based material editor, nor of support for Mental Ray irradiance particles from the Max UI, among other things. Still, this one looks like a very promising release. Find out more at Ken Pimentel’s blog and CGTalk thread on the subject. (Note: keep in mind that this press release is related to 3DS Max Design, there are minor differences between Max Design and Max standard versions.)
