They are not clear anywhere with this, but t seems this is only available with the professional version of the package, not the standard one.
Just as a note.
Cheers!
That’s disappointing. Do you have Photoscan? If so, are you pleased with the results? Still debating on which photogrammetry software to get.
I have Photoscan Standard, Reality Capture and AliceVision Meshroom (this latest one is free and open source)
From the three I think the one that delivers the overall best quality is Reality Capture.
Photoscan usually gives better mesh result (not in all cases) but not by far from Reality Capture, but Reality Capture delivers a way better texture, so the overall result is better in RC, in RC you can also place amnual tie points, wich is something you can´t do in Photoscan.
AliceVision Meshroom is pretty new, the first binary release was done some days ago, but it delivers good results, it´s in early stage but with some lov from the developers (wich it seems to receive) it will catch up on the other two pretty fast.
Depending on what you want to do you may try with Meshroom and later try the other two, and then decide wich one to pick, nothing better to decide than a real taste of the software.
Hope this helps you 🙂
You forgot mention 3DFlow’s Zephyr.
Nope, I did not forgot it, I just don´t use it 🙂
It´s free and “cheap” versions are too limited, 500 photos limit for the “cheap” version makes it not usable for us, and 50 photos for the free… it´s just a toy.
It´s not that I think it´s bad, it´s just that I don´t use it so I don´t know it and I won´t recommend it.
Cheers 🙂
I use it and its one of the fastest solutions and its development is fast (it makes progress faster than other similar solutions and i like that they are open from their development progress: they keep their users up-to-date by development news – whats coming next) and they listen their customers. There is also free full featured trial version. I would recommend test trial version.
500 images limitation is enough for most basic object scans but for environment scanning its not enough i agree. 50 images free version is enough for simple objects if you take good photos (you just need to take photos from correct angels right parallax – it really matters what kind of pictures/photos you take and it matters in every photogrammetry softwares – most users takes useless photos which are just taking time in photogrammetry procession and which do not make the scanning any better its just useless processing with no benefits)
But RC is fastest solution at the moment.
I tried the demo of RC about a year ago, the speed was crazy fast. I’m just not fond of the pricing of RC for the freelancers option since I would be using it only every once in a while. If the company was paying for it, or if I had lots of things to create in a 3 month period; I’d go with RC in a heartbeat.
I’ll give Meshroom a look at again, thanks for pointing that one out. I remember watching someone’s video on it and it seemed semi-good, but that was a while ago.
It´s a bit worse than RC or Photoscan, but it just born so… give it some time, it looks great 🙂
I’ve used Photoscan for a few years now and recently started comparing a bit with the open source Meshroom application that popped up. As Juang3d said, Meshroom is OK, but needs some love still. Although tweaking the paramaters does yield different results, it requires a lot of trial and error and it’s not always clear what the problem is.
Then, Photoscan is really good at what is does. I use the “Standard” version and having bought it a few years ago at this point, have had all the upgrades for free and never any problems. You buy it, get a single serial number and away you go. No subscription crap, basically.
Add to that it’s just a really solid application and the devs / support always answer quickly and are very active in general, it’s worth the investment imho.
I have limited experience with Reality Capture, but it’s sub-based and I’m personally not a fan of that. There’s a cheaper version of it on steam than on their website, but I don’t know what the biggest differences are exactly. And unless I’m wrong it’s the only one that’s not multi-platform, so you can only use it on a windows machine. I’ve also heard that their support can be a little flaky and rude, but haven’t had any firsthand experience, so take that with a grain of salt.
At the end of the day, the quality of your pictures is what counts the most, so if you’re looking to get in to photoscanning, it might be worth it picking up a sharp lens for your camera and starting with Meshroom to get the basics down and going from there if you want to start using the other apps.
RC is sub based just in the cheap version, the others are sold licenses, the difference between the steam and the web cheap version are zero, just that you buy the license in steam, that’s it 🙂
And you are totally right, Photoscan is much better in licensing/pricing, so I totally understand your point.
Cheers!
