Iman Shirani has released a free public beta of the Material Assets Browser, a material library management tool for Autodesk 3ds Max 2025 and later. The tool supports multiple render engines, including V-Ray, Arnold, Octane, RedShift, Fstorm, and Corona, and incorporates modern standards such as MaterialX.
The browser allows users to generate 3ds Max material libraries from MaterialX (.mtlx) files, with automatic configuration of dependent texture paths to ensure accurate display. It also includes a MatCap generator that converts images into materials suited for sculpting and previewing models.
Features include live material preview thumbnails, a context menu for renaming, deleting, assigning, and moving materials, and an option to regenerate thumbnails. Users can configure a root folder for their library and store preferences in a persistent JSON file.
