GeoGen released in public beta
JangaFX has announced the public beta release of GeoGen, a new tool designed for real-time terrain and planet generation. GeoGen aims to simplify the process of creating detailed geological formations and celestial bodies with an intuitive, node-based user interface. The software features sourcing nodes, modifiers, filters, and masks that provide users with comprehensive control over terrain parameters, such as noise and erosion, in a non-destructive workflow. Additionally, GeoGen enables the creation of planets with ease, incorporating atmospheric effects and advanced nodes to simplify the design process for game developers and digital artists.
The latest version, 0.3.0-beta, introduces several updates, although presets from previous versions may not be compatible due to major changes. Key additions include support for subgraphs and new parameters for ground relief noise in the Shape node. The Rock node has seen improvements with the removal of the ‘Maximum height’ parameter, replaced by ‘Squeeze height,’ and enhanced control over rock orientation along the ground. Masks are now more consistent with the Splatter node, and an anisotropy parameter for non-uniform grids has been added.
The Splatter node now has size distribution consistent with the Rock node, better orientation controls, and an underlying ground detail level parameter. New features include the Directional Blur Color node, the ability to delete all image dimension presets, and added ambient occlusion for previews and final renders with adjustable resolution.
Heightmap outputs for the Adjust node now support planets, and the Noise and Fractal nodes can blend directly on top of an input heightmap. Other updates include a ‘Mask blur’ node, a directional blur pass, and new options for Voronoi noise to improve shape regularity. Lighting options have been added to the Mask, Domain, and Color previews, along with numerous other enhancements for rendering and usability.
GeoGen also offers improved rendering quality with bilinear filtering, optimized Voronoi noise, and better volumetric atmosphere rendering. The update includes several bug fixes addressing EXR and RAW imports, link replacement issues, and various interface improvements.
