Particle Skull has posted a great video with a compilation of the first visual applications of particle systems, and a link to the paper in which the term was first introduced by US animator and TD William Reeves. Particle systems are described in the paper as a method for modeling fuzzy objects such as fire, clouds and water, with the ability to represent motion, changes of form and dynamics that are not possible with classical surface-based representations.
