Tech giants form alliance for OpenUSD to boost standardization in the 3D ecosystem
Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA have teamed up with the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), a Linux Foundation affiliate, to establish the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD). The alliance aims to bolster the development and adoption of Pixar’s Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) technology, to facilitate standardization and interoperability in the 3D ecosystem.
The AOUSD’s goal is to enhance the ability for developers and content creators to handle large-scale 3D projects, by refining the OpenUSD’s capabilities. OpenUSD, originally created by Pixar, is a high-performance 3D scene description technology, lauded for its robust interoperability across tools, data, and workflows. Its application extends beyond film and animation, reaching other industries that heavily depend on 3D data.
The alliance plans to draft detailed OpenUSD specifications to further boost its compatibility, integration, and wider adoption. The JDF, which is part of the Linux Foundation, has been chosen to lead this project. The alliance will also serve as the primary forum for defining improvements to OpenUSD through collaborative industry efforts.
