Mirko Haenssgen has released Autoweight, a free script designed to simplify initial skinning set-ups for 3DS Max. To use Autoweight you designate polygon regions on your mesh and the script automatically tries to find appropriate bones, allocates skin vertices and sets up smooth blend transitions between the regions. It is not a one-click-solution but gives a much better starting point for further refinement. Find out more at ScriptSpot.
