New features in the latest version of Ondra Karlík’s renderer plugin for Max include:
- New Virtual Frame Buffer, with better design and
functionality - Optional Light portals, for speeding up rendering of scenes
with small windows - Better system of artistic control fakes (selective
visibility of objects) - New robust algorithms for rendering caustics (toy
implementation, generally not usable in production): - Bidirectional Path tracing
- Vertex Connection and
Merging - Light tracing
- Progressive Photon Mapping
- Option to autosave renders during and at the end of
rendering - GUI layout for settings and texmaps reworked
Plus minor enhancements and bug fixes. Corona is in alpha development stage but is already being used in production and can be downloaded for free. Also of note, a stand-alone version of Corona with a prepared scene that reports rendering time is available for download. More on Corona’s website.

This renderer is yielding some fantastic looking images!
yes, but look at the render time… 🙁
it’s faster to converge than iray with a 570 when running an i7 3770 so to me the rendertimes are very good for the quality
I’ve been using this for a while. It’s not as mature as iray, but I like the direction it’s taking, it’s more flexible and is very fast. I do prefer the way iray handles materials though.
