Direct Modelling 1.5 for Houdini released

Alexey Vanzhula has released an update to Direct Modelling HDA, his modelling tool for Houdini. The plugin comprises 4 parts, including a SoftBoolean toolset which was an evolution of an earlier tool called Flux that creates procedural models using boolean operations. As the name suggests it can create soft transitions between operands. The Geometry Library allows the user to create a catalogue of geometric data without needing to create separate files. InsertMesh, which is similar to Polystein allows the user to kitbash by embed pieces of geometry in any part of a model. Finally, a modeller mode which adds classic polygonal modelling tools.

Direct Modeller costs $100 for a perpetual license. To see what’s new, visit Gumroad or watch a preview of the tool in action on YouTube.

That’s not very “direct”, if he has to constantly travel the mouse cursor all the way to some panel on the right to do basic modeling tool adjustments. That’s been the main issue with Houdini’s direct modeling tools (or lack thereof), and this addon doesn’t seem to address it that much 😐

There are no needs to go to the right panel in the release. The video is about early 1.5 beta. Videos about actual modeling features are coming…

I really hope so. Having to interact with UI so much in Houdini was the biggest pain when I tried to model it in. It kept taking focus away from the actual work. I am happy someone finally decided to address that.

As Alexey mentioned, it was very early during development. The new Modeler Mode is absolutely hands on, and almost no reason to go into any node tree or panel. More up to date videos will show this. I just need to find the spare time.

When will we see the release video? I like everything about this, but I can’t tell how shortcuts work, what the actual UI looks like etc from the demo video. $100 is a fair price if it really works the way I am hoping, but it’s a lot of money to just try and hope. 🙂
