Chaos Group has announced the release of V-Ray Next update 2 for 3DS Max bringing V-Ray IPR enhancements and V-Ray GPU updates plus all new memory tracking reports and Debug Shading in IPR. Improvements to GPU and Cloud rendering include support for: Substance 2 maps, VRayCurvature texture,  VRayDistanceTex and VRayALSurfaceMtl shaders.

Both V-Ray and V-Ray GPU gain Debug Shading with various modes during IPR, a new Hash map based light cache and native rendering of Corona scatter instances.

V-Ray adds adds memory tracking support, baking elements support for opacity map when doing projection baking, and a new  barycentric mode in the VRaySamplerInfoTex.

Other improvements include changes to the VFB which can now do test renders at lower resolution, and there are keyboard shortcuts for mouse actions in IPR mode. 3DS Max’s OSL shading graph is now supported and there’s a new V-RayToonMtl.

Finally, VRayVolumeGrid gets support for V-Ray GPU render elements including  VRayNormals, VRaySamplerInfo, VRayZDepth, VRayVelocity, VRayGI, VRayDiffuseFilter, VRayShadows, VRayObjectID, VRayRenderID. It is also now possible modulate or replace the Fire Opacity with a texture in “Use Own Opacity” mode.

Many more improvements and fixes are included. See a full changelog on the V-Ray Documentation page and find out more about the release on the product page.

What is the advantage of Vray Next vs old school VRAY 2.4 with 10 included render nodes?

Are you asking what has changed in VRay in the past 6 years?

I know it is faster, but from a cost perspective for product rendering, is it worth switching to if I have to buy additional render nodes – if I have 10 render nodes included with 2.4?

The render node price might be overkill, but if the workflow is faster (thanks to IPR , automatic sampling ..etc) and overall speed boost is huge in your kind of projects then it might be worth it.
I would download the trial and test these two things and then do the math.
for me, I can’t even go back to work with 3.0 after using NExt, but I only have 2 render nodes so the cost wasn’t an issue.
