Germany-based 3d-io, developers of quality software such as BonesPro and Unwrella, have announced “Exr-IO”, a free OpenEXR reader / writer for Adobe Photoshop. Exr-IO is a robust solution for dealing with complex multi-layer pictures, it loads all image channels from OpenEXR files into separate Photoshop layers while preserving exact values, transparencies and dimensions. Exr-IO supports all OpenEXR features and provides workflow optimizations for Photoshop:
  • Open and save all channels of the OpenEXR file
  • Support for Photoshop layer features like blending and opacity
  • Deep data sample import
  • Accurate support for chromaticities and color formats
  • Support for OpenEXR display window specification
  • Extensive load and save options
  • Adobe Photoshop 32 and 64 bit versions support (Windows)
Watch some videos on YouTube and download Exr-IO from the official website.

This feature should be by default in Photoshop. Very useful plugin.

Totally, it should be!
In Affinity Photo EXR comes with all the passes 😉

Good thing but the problem still the same here. photoshop dont have linear workflow in 8 or 16 bit channel.

retouchers dont work in 32 bits. if you have a solution to have a linear workflow in 8 or 16 bit , it will be ideal (like in after effects)

@Marco well photoshop has many plugins that affinity photo is not, you might have exr passes in that software but it seems like you can’t see photoshop does more, and only because you don’t want to pay subscription or are an affinity fanboy (like if a serious company would want a serif software) doesn’t mean you are right.
Getting an inferior software with less plugins and less amazing tools only because better exr support which I can get now for free, simply doesn’t make sense to me.

I don’t want to start a discussion about x vs y, I’m sorry if my post triggered it.
But when I see that an essential support to EXR like this comes so late, and not from a corporation like Adobe with years of development with thousands of employees and lots of money, but a third party developer! and then I check what a little small company can do in almost no time, I can’t help but post what I posted.

Why are you saying Affinity is inferior? Explain that.
Just read what anonymous wrote above your post, and think again.
And now, a few hints about Affinity:

– You can actually edit 32 bit images
– Curves can switch to CMYK or LAB within the same document color space (try that with PS!)
– Live filters
– You can use shapes to color (it seems a minor thing, when you start using it you wonder why you should still use masks and selections – it’s so much faster)
– Better depth of field, for someone like you who likes plugin that should sound like a good thing
– Vector scopes! You heard that right 🙂
– Photoshop plugins: yes, it still not there 100% yet, but it’s a BETA! Adobe has been on the market for what? almost 30 years!
– OCIO support

Lastly, if you would try Affinity Designer, then you would realize the tremendous potential of what Affinity is doing. The combo is a killer.

I love PS, I simply don’t like what Adobe has been doing and where is headed. Clean UI and dumb-proof tools make me think they only want the Instagram-like users and the rent model works for them.
I’ve been using Adobe for 20 years, I know what I’m talking about. I know PS really, really well.
My personal license ended with CS6. At work, we’ve updating ever since, and each update is a frustrating experience in terms of bug and useless features.
Now, check what the devs on Affinity are doing. New beta and bug fixed every other day. I can’t help but wonder how on earth a corporation like Adobe with all its power, can’t deliver a solid release for once and between each release I have to deal with bugs that are fixed at a unbelievable slow pace.

Then wonder why people start looking somewhere else.
Just my 2 c.

Also, if you are going to compose a 3D image, it would make more sense to use a real compositing software with nicer features (which can be gotten even for free) to do this kind of job. So…

Unfortunately no osx version :/
@Halo Just because PS has more plugins doesn’t excuse the lack of pro features of the late versions. Also pointing that this functionality exists in affinity photo doesn’t automatically make you a fanboy -.-‘

Hi DBav

There will be a Mac version…. one day they fix the SDK.

Sierra has broken the compatibility of the Adobe SDK and apparently no one knows how to compile in the new OS version. The last Adobe SDK for Apple-OS is from 2013. The thing is dead and no one has interest in fixing it.
We can program you small IPhone Apps or some mobile sh*t, but not a desktop application for workstation customers. It is a sad story of Apple regress for supporting professional artists and developers, and with each version of OSX it is getting worse.

We have here since weeks a working Mac Version of “Exr-IO”, as prototype, for older OSs. Once Apple/Adobe clean the mess in Sierra, we will back in game.

I am sorry for bad news, but it is not our fault.
Please send your complains to Tim Cook (his email: tcook@apple.com) 🙂

cheers

Hey Igor
Thanks for the head up, really appreciated. I guess it’s time to switch to Windows 🙂

Can you let us have the working version of EXR-IO for Mac if we are on older systems like El Capitan?

I think PS goes to casual users.
A-Photo it’s a future.
