this is like watching somebody drawing with their feet, it’s doable, but doesn’t mean we all should do it
why do you think so? this is an add-on for self-sufficient polygonal modeling. Who said it’s not possible?
That looks solid!… whish it was natively in Houdini.
Great update 👍 👏
Is there a video of something complex being made with this plugin. Like a brief tutorial or even a timelapse?
This looks like pain
So, when Max had this same tools and features natively in the default installation 15 years ago was the worst 3D DCC, but having them now in Houdini, 15 years later, as a 100$ addon with a terrible UI is great
Who said 3ds Max was the worst 3D DCC because of its direct modelling toolset??? Do not try to be equivocal. Who said Max with $500 tyFlow, $400 per year Phoenix, $420 Forest Pack and Railclone, $600 Ornatrix is not great???
I think people feel a bit intimidated by the Houdini environment, the addon itself is actually pretty solid, and regarding Max, the pro tools (I think it was called) was the first plugin I bought for max, it was revolutionary at that point and Max was regarded as one of the best modeling tools at the time it was integrated into the ribbon regardless al the backlash (circa 2009), the problem with Max is the lack of innovation, development, the high price tag the bugs, the crashes, the time it (at least used to) take to open, the old and bloated codebase, the horrible treatement towards the customers, the huge size, the malware behaviour of the satellite autodesk apps, etc. Even talking about said modeling tools, when Max’s decline kind of was starting to be felt you could see how there was lack of interest in better integrating these tools and they just seated there without any further significant development.
It’s not that this plugin is panaceic by any means, but it is nice, the real value is that as a user I don’t want Sidefx to waste resources in an area where most of the times it does not matter where you model, but as a plugin it still gives you the flexibility to do it quickly in a Houdinistic way, with a solid plugin that is geared mostly to people that as myself feel just really comftrable in houdini’s environment, so I feel that the comments have been a bit harsh and they come mostly (in my opinion) from a lack of undertanding about who this might be geared towards (I might be completely wrong).
Lastly I think there’s something to be said about the great quality in Alexey’s addons, I think this should be considered since it is someone that puts so much care on each iteration probably has a target in mind and houdini is suis generis enough to maybe lend a process applied to it as a target to be misunderstood
This plug-in is solid. If you are going to be doing direct poly modeling in Houdini, you definitely need this plug-in. I would agree that this plug-in + Houdini probably won’t beat the modeling tools + UX of other DCCs that are geared towards that type of work, but for Houdini that is mainly focused on procedural/viewport independent workflows, this plug-in is a nice addition; that way you don’t have to open other software to do your poly-modeling.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that you definitely need it, Modeling with the modeling desktop or the new nodes for integrated modeling such as topobuild is surprisingly intuitive, I’ve actually caome to like it a lot, having said that, the plugin is a nice set of tools and a workflow improvement. I can’t recommend the soft boolean plugin enough also, it’s very affordable and I think yesterday I recived a minor update in my mail, which is nice 🙂
