J. Antonio Amblés has released his new Lightmesh plugin with which you can turn any object into a lightsource.
Lightmesh works by putting a light at each vertex of a mesh. This lights can be omni or free direct and their color will be defined by:
1) the color of the texture bitmap on every vertex.
2) the diffuse color of the material assigned to the object.
3) the color of the object.
With LightMesh you will get soft shadows and some fake “Arnold” look.
Antonio will be working on a new version that supports n-th vertex placing of lights.
