California-based Redshift Rendering Technologies announced that they’re working on making their GPU-accelerated biased renderer compatible with 3DS Max. Features include an out-of-core architecture that allows to render massive scenes that would otherwise not fit in video memory, geometry instancing, progressive rendering mode, physically correct surface shaders, point-based SSS, sampling optimizations, etc. More on Redshift’s site.

As a Softimage user that tests it i say that it is wonderful render engine that any Maxer should at least give it a run when it appears.
Be aware of GPU needs for now only Nvidia cards.

I have been waiting for the right general purpose renderer to repleace the aging mental ray. It looks like this is it.

This has nothing to do with demise of Softimage. It was always intention of developers as stated when anyone asked them . Maxunderground was just a bit later in catching that.

Also Softimage doesn’t have many plugins since ICE replaces a lot of plugins reason of existence.
Here is the well know Max developer Clovis Gay building a deformer with ICE http://vimeo.com/45473465
