Silhouette 2024 Powered by Machine Learning
Boris FX has announced Silhouette 2024 with several new features that use machine learning to improve rotoscoping workflows.
The Matte Assist ML feature allows users to create animated mattes from a single frame using the Roto, Paint, or the new EZ Mask Node. This tool uses AI to automate the process, reducing the need for extensive manual work and enabling quicker results through data port communication between nodes. This feature can be integrated with traditional roto or procedural techniques to optimize workflow.
Optical Flow ML generates optical flow data for use in Silhouette’s roto nodes. This includes Roto, Roto Blend, Tracker, Power Mask, Morph, and Depth nodes. It facilitates the estimation of per-pixel motion between frames, aiding in tracking shapes, objects, or point trackers. Optical Flow ML speeds up roto tasks by using an Auto Keyframe tool that combines flow data with manual animation.
The Retime ML feature provides improved motion estimation and retiming models, allowing for smooth time warps and animated ramping. This tool is driven by algorithms trained on thousands of images, enabling precise speed adjustments for selected frame ranges and allowing keyframe effects for enhanced control.
Silhouette 2024 also introduces several improvements for better performance. Users can expect up to 30% speed increases when using multiple GPU nodes and a 33% reduction in memory usage for roto nodes. Additionally, caching improvements allow more frames to be stored in RAM, and a new Cache Node stores all upstream nodes to disk for faster playback.
Finally, Silhouette’s paint tools now support Adobe Photoshop brushes. The Mocha Pro Node features new 3D tracking powered by SynthEyes, and updates have been made to Sapphire, Continuum, and Particle Illusion effects, bringing them to their latest versions.

This is how AI is going to kill thousand of jobs, not because of prompting videos directly like some think, but by making each tools 200x more productive.
Team of 20 needed for rotoprep 200 shots? Nah, let’s put one guy on the job to check the outputs are correct and do minor retakes if needed.
I don’t say it’s good or bad, but get used to it, it’s just the beginning.
You do realize we’ve been using these tools for years now, right? Rotobrush, magic mask? Silhouette is just late to the party. And no, it’s not better than the others. All promotional videos show how crappy the produced alpha is. I’m waiting for a day when roto will be a thing of the past – guess I keep waiting :/
kaczorefx is totally right. judging by what I saw in the previews I
d place it somewhere at the level of Adobe After Effect
s Rotobrush 3.0 which is better than Magic Mask. Rotobrush is usable most of the times but it`s not something you can use for very precise work.In my experience Magic Mask has been better than RotoBrush but maybe it depends from the source material.
