Southpaw Technology has made available a desktop version of its web-based production asset management system under an open source license. Tactic Team is aimed at smaller teams and for the evaluation of Tactic’s core features. Once users get accustomed to Tactic Team, they can upgrade to the more robust Enterprise version, which is also available as open source but must be requested by contacting Southpaw. The company will continue to offer support packages, professional services and commercial licenses to entities who prefer or require such licenses. More on Southpaw Technology’s website.
Coincidently, 72hrs earlier, another software company announced it was entering the asset management area of business:

Just want to clear the air on the difference between our TACTIC Team and TACTIC Enterprise Versions. Overall, there is no difference in terms of usage and both have been released under the EPL Open Source license. The only difference is that Team is a simple, self contained install and Enterprise needs to be installed on a server running a database and a webserver. Team can be a great way to get started and use Tactic in smaller scale but if you want to use Tactic for many people than you will want to use the Enterprise edition. The only costs with TACTIC (if you choose) are to sign up for support and services so that your Open Source installation will be full supported.
