Unity has made their IOS and Android expansions free for mobile developers with Blackberry 10 and Windows Phone 8 expected in the next few months. As with the main application, there remain a paid professional edition with many more features. Find out more at Unity3D.
Would of been great news but alas, if you examine the version they offer for free, it’s heavily feature deprived compared to the pro version.
The headline should of read, Unity releases ‘Lite’ version of Unity3D for IOS and Android free of charge.
This is in no way a “Lite” version of the game engine
Sure the free versions miss some essential core features like static batching etc… But the Unity engine provides such a vast amount of good stuff, completeness and clever way of doing things. All this is part of this free offer. For ZERO, NADA money !
It’s a generous offer by all means
How do you expect any company to stay alive and in business when they would’nt leave any incentive to buy the pro version, which is damn cheap for all the things it provides too ?
Sometimes i find it hard to believe and almost can’t stand it how quickly people forgot how difficult it was 5 yrs ago to get your hands on ANY good and complete engine without handing out LOADS over LOADS of cash ( this is not targeted at you directly, Nossgrr, just generally speaking …)
This is a great move. It gets them more users (and thus more stressing of features resulting in more solid releases), but it also allows those of who want to to make something, make a bit of money, and buy pro.
