Unity

Google maps API now available for Unity

Google has announced that its maps API has been extended to Unity so that geographical information can be use to create game environments based on the real world. This includes access to data like buildings, roads, and other landmarks which can be imported as game objects for further processing. In addition to making it easier to place 3D objects in the real world for AR apps, several examples show buildings and other environmental data being textured and styled in completely different ways. Substance Painter 2018 Spring update

Allegorithmic has released an update to Substance Painter. Version 2018.1 introduces several improvements to the core functionality including a new visual style that is intended to unify the feel across the substance portfolio. New UI elements have been added including a dock and contextual toolbar and right-click access to quick menus for the current tool; Viewer and Display settings have been reworked and it's now possible to drag and drop assets directly into the viewports.

Paul Debevec experiments with light fields

Google senior research Paul Debevec has published a blog post detailing his experiments with Light Fields, which are capable of capturing environments in such a way that the user can move through space and see convincing parallax movement in VR. To capture information the team created a rig based on 16 Go Pro cameras that can produce an environment in which the user can move their heads freely within a 70cm sphere. Textools for Blender 1.1 released

Hendrik-Jan Schoenmaker has released an update to TexTools for Blender, a free port of his original script of the same name originally created for 3DS Max. Version 1.1 includes a useful new tool to wrap meshes like textures around your objects, a depth mask baker that can be used for creating displacement maps, the ability to bake wireframes as a black and white mask, a new Cycles AO baking mode that supports cages, the ability to select flipped UVs, a tool to apply IDs from directions plus more features and fixes. PaintCube Beta announced

PaintCube has released the beta for a new web-based 3D painting app of the same name, designed to work on nearly any modern device. It allows the user to paint onto 3D models using familiar tools and includes Photoshop-style layers to blend and combine textures. A customisable material system enables editing of the model's shaders and the finished textures can be exported for use in other applications or Photoshop format for further editing. Pricing is rental-based on $7 per month or $50 per year. A free 14-day trial is available. Find out more on the PaintCube website.

Mudbox

Mudbox 2018.2 released with dynamic tessellation and new sculpt tools

Autodesk has announced a new update to Mudbox, the first to add significant new features in quite a while. Version 2018.2's flagship feature is a new dynamic tesselation mode that is able to add additional polygons to the model interactively as you sculpt. This alleviates the need to start from a high-density base because the detail is added as and when it is needed.
