Researchers at the University of Cincinnati are experimenting with e-paper diplays that will eventually help produce foldable/rollable mobile devices. According to UC’s Matthew Hagedon, their “proof-of-concept breakthrough takes [them] one step closer to brighter, color video e-paper and the Holy Grail of rollable/foldable displays”. More on University of Cincinnati’s website.
Roll up I believe. Foldable not so sure. Why do I want a foldable / rollable screen? Rollable / retractable screens seam to be a big want for industrial designers. We’ve all seen the round tube that the screen pulls out of. Sure it looks cool but I don’t want to walk around with a tube in my pocket.
As well for the large newspaper format thin screen. It just seams impractical to dedicate screens to one medium. This is star trek nex gens view of the future. Remember they always had more then one tablet. Why would you have more then one iPad to do your work. Like the enterprise didn’t have the cloud!
Sure I could see a real practical application for a foldable screen but I just don’t see how any material could survive repeated folds.
I’m much more interested in a low energy, low heat, thin, true black / color screen the the latter.
