As earlier reported, Autodesk has decided to make available for free its compositing application formerly known as Toxik, as well as Matchmover, the camera tracker originally developed by Realviz (acquired by Autodesk in 2008). The software can now be downloaded from the Autodesk Exchange website. (Note: both tools have stopped receiving significant updates years ago)

Autodesk policy: “BB” (buy & break) 🙁

Agreed, but both these products have always been Autodesk, haven’t they?

No, they have not. Matchmover was a product from Realviz. And yes, AD did BB it.

Toxik was such a massive missed opportunity. It could have been a true competitor to Nuke. Even with no (real) development in the past 3 years, it still holds up OK.

Now it is really the best ‘free’ compositing app around, and will continue to be useful for at least half a decade before it’s just too obsolete.

I have never felt it was ‘worth’ investing any serious time in learning/adopting the software since it was clearly dead, but i do think it is commendable of Autodesk to give free access to all as opposed to just bury it (like combustion).

It will make a fantastic companion to something like Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects.

Who knows, it may finally get a large enough community now with some great scripts, tips and plugins. That would be great.

i’d prefer combustion was free than toxik…but hey, it’s free..so good news for people on a tight budget.
