Autodesk unveils 3DS Max App Store

by CGP Staff

Autodesk has unveiled the 3DS Max App store, an extension to its Autodesk Exchange Apps website. According to the description, the “Autodesk Exchange Apps provides a centralized storefront for Autodesk customers to find apps that enhance their productivity”. Apps are defined as anything a customer finds useful, including plugins, standalone applications, training tutorials, e-books, etc. The FAQ states that Autodesk at some point in the future may take a commission that could be up to 30%, but for now it’s taking zero commission on sales.

The App Store does not seem to limit licensing of content to a certain region or offer varying prices according to geographic regions, and as such offers a contrast with Autodesk policies for its own software.

Read the Publisher FAQ and head over to the 3DS Max App Store for more.

(Errata / Addenda) A correction is in order to this news item published yesterday. The Autodesk App Store was first introduced in AutoCAD 2012 as the Autodesk Apps Tab, back in 2011. It was later made available as a website in 2012 and its add-ons expanded to other Autodesk software; it has now been extended to 3DS Max (and other software).

I really waited for something like this. Should be easier to dedicate more time to complex script development etc. when there’s the chance to get some income from it. Until now it’s always been a matter off other (money earning) contracts interupting development…

This is great. Hopefully the flexible licencing and 0% commission is enough to get the app store off the ground and some popularity.
Hopefully the licencing and commission stays like that for a while too!

It would be great if the new max app store had an integration with the 3ds max animation store. Then you could not only browse for animations and characters from within the software, but purchase and install scripts & plugins too. that’d be nice!

How is this an app store? Im not going to be buying something for Max while on my phone. Unless these tools are 99 cents last thing I want to do is fill up my current bloated app called 3ds max with more bloat.

Of course if people start to build this E-Store for the billion dollar company called Autodesk then there is no doubt they will take their cut. Look out TurboSquid if this works for them nothing is stopping them from selling models next.
