“Great CGI, shame on you for the rest.” An ad made for Johnnie Walker stirs controversy by featuring a CG recreation of Bruce Lee in a spot that shows a bottle of alcohol. The idea of using the image of someone who is no longer alive to take part in something he might not have agreed to has angered many of Bruce Lee’s followers, prompting the director to post a message explaining his position.
Besides the particular case, it’s interesting to note that we’re seeing the beginning of a trend, and that these issues are bound to repeat much more often in the future, as CG recreations of human characters keep evolving and become easier to perform. We may, at some point not far in the future, see a “CG and work ethics” course be taught at the end of a CG studies career. Watch the video and read the comments on Vimeo.
