Danish director and VFX artist Henrik Bjerregaard Clausen has recently directed an ‘ident’ video for Scandinavian production company Level Up Pictures. The video was created using After Effects, Trapcode Particular, Premiere, a mixture of stock footage from Compositor’s Toolkit and Video Copilot Action Essentials.

Here is a brief making of, courtesy of Henrik Bjerregaard Clausen:
– For the first shot (crane moving up revealing forest) I solved the camera move using AE’s built in camera to create a digital camera, and then eyeballed the distance for the background layers.
– The only pure 3D asset inside the hut was the 3D apple. The shots where the camera is moving I used some (dirty) 2D tracking to solve the move. One of my goals on this project was to do as little digital production as possible, relying on physical production design, on-set lighting and as much in-camera practical effects as possible (dry ice for smoke pouring out from the magic brew, flicker box for fire effect below cauldron and a smoke machine for a thin layer of atmospheric haze filling the room and making the light literally bounce inside the air).
A big shout out to my client, Level Up Pictures, and the whole crew for making everything work on set. I will definitely be doing more practical work in the future (aided by digital where it makes sense of course :-).
