J Cube has announced the release of MUSE, and acronym for Multiverse USD Standalone Editor. The software allows users to open and interactively visualise any USD assets and compositions without the need for a DCC application. According to the developers MUSE is intended to ” provide a fast and non-destructive multi-editing of attributes in a USD file, adding references to other USD files, write USD overrides and write USD compositions with overrides” and more. Looks very nice, but I am wondering for who this could be a benefit? I don’t work with USD myself, but can people that work with USD not simply edit the scene in the software that they made the file with in the first place? When would they need a separate editing software?
At least this shows how the whole open-source approach allows smaller teams to create these impressive tools. Good stuff.
Perhaps high level scene staging? I’m hoping to push our product portfolio to USD (product rendering) and think it would be great to allow Product Managers to open up our current USD file per product to inspect for general accuracy (although I don’t want them editing anything).
But I agree with you. More specialized applications for this stuff.
