Proxy Textures for 3DS Max

Spline Dynamics has released Proxy Textures, a new plugin for 3DS Max that promises to quickly optimize textures for improved viewport performance and faster rendering. It works by temporarily reducing the size of textures with options to use the original textures only at render time. It can also be used to select and reduce unnecessarily large textures, for example on objects that are far from the camera, to speed up renders; or reduce the size of all textures for previews. Find out more on the Spline Dynamics website.

You don’t need a script to do that. You can literally open up the viewport config menu with Alt+B and change the maximum displayed texture size.

This is totally different. The plugin creates an alternative folder with lowres textures and assign them to the corresponding materials, which causes a great reduction in RAM consumption. If you change the viewport texture size from Max settings, there’s almost no improvement in viewport performance and excessive RAM memory is not released, because the highres textures are always in memory. With this plugin, only the lowres textures load in memory and you can swtich to highres versions when you desire.
You can download the Trial version, try and then you tell me.:)
